A novel low-power infra-red (IR) transceiver and applicationsoftware combination enables mobile phones and PDAs to functionas universal IR remote control devices for televisions, VCRs,DVDs and other home appliances. The Agilent solution is easier tointegrate into new product designs and requires fewer externalcomponents than competing solutions, and it offers an extendedremote control distance of up to 8m.
The Agilent HSDL-3003dual-function transceiver supports both low-power serialinfra-red (SIR) and remote control operation.
The transceiver iscompliant with IrDA Physical Layer version 1.4 low-powerstandards and operates at SIR datarates from 9.6 to 115.2Kbit/s.It is offered in a small-profile surface-mount package, withdimensions of 2.70 x 8.00 x 2.95mm, and combines an IrDA linkdistance of up to 50cm.
This allows the PDA or phone to transferdata, such as 'point-and-pay' infra-red financialmanagement (IrFM) transactions, business cards, messages orfiles, over an increased distance.

The HSDL-3003 also has aflexible programming mode to enable easy software programming.
Ithas very low idle current at typically 50uA and its shutdowncurrent of 10nA helps extend battery life in mobile devices.
Inthe shutdown mode, the PIN diode will be inactive, thusgenerating very little photocurrent even under very brightambient light.
All Agilent IR transceivers are IEC 825-Class 1compliant.
Agilent's complementary HSDL-S300 applicationsoftware is a universal remote control program with a predefinedremote control database and a self-teach/learn mode.
The softwareincorporates profiles for TV, DVD, VCR, air conditioning, CD,audio, LD/VCD (laser disk/video compact disk) and other homeappliances.
Each profile can have up to 10 sets of devicecontrols, thus 80 home appliance devices can be stored and eachdevice can have up to 32 buttons/functions which can either becontrolled via the mobile phone's or PDA's touch screenor keypad buttons.
The Agilent HSDL-3003 IrDA/remote controltransceiver is available through Agilent's direct saleschannel and Agilent's worldwide distribution partners.
TheHSDL-S300 application software is available now throughAgilent's Asia Pacific distribution partners, and isexpected to be available through Agilent's US and Europeandistributors later this year.
