A new dual signal conditioner chip gives designers twice the functionality in less than half the real estate occupied by two individual SOP8 packages sized at 5 x 6.30mm

ZMD has expanded sensor capabilities by incorporating two signal conditioners in one slim package under the product name of ZMD31012. The new device contains two ZMD31010 devices in a single SSOP14 package sized at 6.33 x 7.90mm, giving designers twice the functionality in less than half the real estate occupied by two individual SOP8 packages sized at 5 x 6.30mm.

By doubling up devices in one package, the ZMD31012 enables sensor manufacturers to monitor two independent channels for redundant applications, differential pressure and flow.

The device also accommodates separate digital compensation of sensor offset, sensitivity, temperature drift, and nonlinearity.

The chip enables easy and precise calibration of resistive bridge sensors via EEPROM.

When mated to a resistive bridge sensor, the ZMD31012 will digitally correct offset and gain coefficients and linearity over temperature.

A second compensation can also be enabled for temperature coefficients of gain or offset or bridge linearity.

Like other devices in the ZMD RBic-Lite signal conditioner family, the ZMD31012 provides high accuracy across a temperature range of -50 to +150C.

Current consumption is a low 2mA, and response time is a fast 1ms.

'Space is a critical factor in every application', stated Frank Cooper, President of ZMD America.

'By packing more functionality into a smaller area, customers can sharpen sensing functions while minimising board real estate'.

The ZMD31012 communicates via ZMD's ZACwire serial interface to the host computer and is easily mass-calibrated using a Microsoft Windows environment.

Once calibrated, the output signal pin can provide selectable 0-1V, rail-to-rail ratiometric analogue output, or digital serial output of bridge data with optional temperature data.

The ZMD31012 is available now in ceramic samples at a cost of $1.40 each in quantities of 50,000 devices.

A ZMD31010 development kit can be used for ZMD31012 applications.

The kit is available by visiting the ZMD website.
