Wood and Douglas has supplied AA Roadwatch with radio transmitters, receivers and Airlinks as part of its launch of live airborne traffic broadcasts starting this month

The specially equipped aircraft, Piper Seneca II twin props, will be fitted with the latest communications equipments and travel broadcasters will use their bird's eye view of the roads to keep motorists out of jams. The equipment will be installed on three aircraft flying out of Bristol, Coventry and Southend airports and the reports will be used by around 30 FM radio stations in England.

The breadth of traffic reporting and numbers of listeners makes this one of the biggest exercises of its kind.

Reports will be made during breakfast show and evening drive times.

The deal includes making AA traffic information available to the online presence of the GWR stations through www.koko.com, the group website which represents each station at a local level The order comprises seven Airlinks for air to ground reporting, 10 base receivers and 10 base transmitters.

Airlink provides a high quality reporter downlink from the aircraft while simultaneously allowing the reporter to listen to commands from the ground, listen to the radio station on-air program and also to the aircraft intercom traffic.

The ground location equipment consists of Wood and Douglas Ltd SLK460R receivers and SLK170T transmitters.

The SLK460R is an extended audio UHF receiver with excellent RF signal handling characteristics.

The SLK170T is a specially commissioned version of the standard SLK460T.

Operation in this application was at VHF with a RF power output level of 10W.

A voice-operated switch (VOX) is integrated into the SLK170T to allow simplified operator control.

Both SLK units are AC powered with option for 12V DC operation and have line level audio interfaces to match the base infrastructure.

The SLK series of studio transmission links are in widespread use in UK radio networks for terrestrial remote reporting activities.

Airlink is a dedicated airborne derivative of the industry respected PMRL030 reporter link.
