Codecs take on multichannel audio
The WM8772 is the first member of a new family of audio codecs for surround sound applications
The WM8772 is the first member of a new family of audio codecs from Wolfson Microelectronics for surround sound applications. The WM8772 is the company's first to integrate both the ADC and a six-channel DAC on a single chip. It offers performance comparable to any competing product but in a smaller package and at a lower cost, making it ideal for the latest 'lifestyle' mini component applications.

"Wolfson's reputation for providing the industry with outstanding audio components is undisputed", said David Milne, Wolfson's Managing Director.
"And I believe we have raised the competitive bar once again with the WM8772.
Providing solid audio record and playback in a small form factor has become an industry checkpoint.
Customers require their entertainment devices to be more versatile than ever before".
In DVD-RW (read-write) devices, for example, the user will often record at one rate, typically 48kHz, and playback at another, typically 44.1kHz.
Prior to the introduction of the WM8772 this required two separate devices, but Wolfson's design enables the ADC and the DAC to run completely independently and at different sample rates, offering the end user greater flexibility of record and playback options.
In addition, the WM8772 can configure the ADC to be the master and the DAC the slave or vice versa.
The WM8772 integrates the WM8738, a stereo ADC, with the WM8746 a six-channel DAC to enhance the entertainment value.
In a karaoke machine, for example, the ADC digitises the voice and mixes it with the audio being played back.
The DACs provide the capability to support Dolby 5.1 audio surround playback.
The WM8772 comes in either 28-pin SSOP or 32-pin TQFP versions.
In the SSOP, the ADC and the DAC must use the same sample rate.
In the 32-pin TQFP, there is no such restriction.
Both parts are available now.
