Wolfson Microelectronics has extended its range of devices for the communications and instrumentation markets with the of the WM2124 and WM2125

Both devices are dual 10bit, 40Msample/s ADCs, which simultaneously convert each analogue input signal into a 10bit, binary coded digital word, up to a maximum sampling rate of 40Msample/s per channel. Additionally the WM2125 features dual, onboard programmable gain amplifiers (PGAs) that allow a setting of 0 to 18dB to adjust the gain of each set of inputs in order to match the amplitude of the incoming signal.

A serial control interface is provided to control these PGAs and other device modes of operation.

Digital inputs and outputs are 3.3V TTL/CMOS compatible on both devices.

"The old boundaries between communications, multimedia and computing will continue to blur as new breeds of products integrate previously disparate technologies", said David Milne, managing director for Wolfson Microelectronics.

"Each application has its own requirements for conversion speed, resolution, noise performance, and analogue processing.

With the introduction of the WM2124 and WM2125, we have leveraged our long-standing expertise in data conversion, to expand our product family and offer our customers successively more integrated, low power solutions".

He continued, "With a core conversion speed of 40Msample/s these devices are ideal for applications such as digital copiers and video cameras, set top boxes, IF and baseband digitisation, medical imaging and other instruments for high-speed data acquisition".

The innovative dual pipeline architecture, implemented in a CMOS process, and the 3.3V supply results in a very low power dissipation of 275mW.

In order to provide maximum flexibility, both top and bottom voltage references can be set from user-supplied voltages.

Alternatively, if no external references are available, the on-chip internal references can be used.

Internally both ADCs share a common reference to improve offset and gain matching.

If external reference voltage levels are available, the internal references can be powered down independently from the rest of the chip, resulting in even greater power savings.

The WM2124 and WM2125 are available in 48-pin TQFP packages for commercial applications from 0 to +70C operating temperature, or industrial applications requiring -40 to +85C operation.
