New from Wolfson Microelectronics, the WM8150 is an single-channel 12bit integrated analogue front end (AFE) with 4bit-wide output for use with CCDs and CMOS image sensors

Offering the complete signal path between sensor and digital processor this AFE is designed to work with either CMOS or CCD sensors at a pixel sample rate up to 8Msample/s. The signal path includes reset level clamping, correlated double sampling, programmable gain and offset adjust functions.

The offset DAC and the programmable gain amplifier can each be switched to different values using on chip registers and multiplexers to make processing of line-by-line RGB colour information easy.

The programmable gain amplifier is monotonic over its 8bit range, and gives input voltage range from 0.3V for full scale digital output at maximum gain to 3.22V for full scale digital output at minimum gain.

Overall differential nonlinearity is typically 0.5LSB and integral nonlinearity is typically 2LSB.

The device uses either a single 5V supply rail, or a 5V analogue supply and a digital interface supply of either 5 or 3.3V.

Current consumption is 45mA max but power down modes offer 1mA operation with all analogue functions off, and 300uA in full power down mode.

This new product fills a gap in Wolfson's range of AFE products for scanners and multifunction peripherals by providing a high performance versatile single input part, which avoids the cost, and power overheads of high pin count and high-speed multichannel devices.

Wolfson's Marketing VP Julian Hayes says, "This product exemplifies the advantages of keeping high density digital functions and specialist mixed signal blocks as separate tried and tested blocks, each using appropriate silicon technology.

Keeping the AFE pin count low allows use of low cost packaging and high throughput test solutions.

We expect to see this AFE at the heart of market leading multi function peripherals and scanners within the year, as the fight over this space in the computer peripheral market intensifies".

Samples and production quantities of the WM8150 are available now packaged in 20-pin SSOPs.
