New from Wind River, the 405GP SBC hardware reference design enables rapid development of FPGA and CPU coprocessing hardware, as well as the testing and debugging of software

New from Wind River, the 405GP single board computer hardware reference design enables rapid bring-up of FPGA and CPU coprocessing hardware, as well as the testing and debugging of software for this fast-emerging class of applications. Devices that benefit from FPGA/CPU coprocessing design are numerous and span a wide variety of market segments, including imaging, networking, wireless and consumer electronics.

In addition, Wind River's 405GP SBC has been selected as the recommended hardware reference design for the next-generation Virtex-II Platform FPGA from Xilinx.

In coprocessing designs, the CPU typically runs system applications while the FPGA manages other computationally intensive tasks, resulting in significantly improved system performance.

FPGA hardware can be programmed with new functionality after the product has been deployed.

This phenomenon is often referred to as reconfigurable computing.

"Wind River's 405GPSBC development board gives embedded systems engineers the unique ability to initially develop a loosely coupled embedded system bus with a tightly coupled processor bus all on a complete platform FPGA fabric", said Rich Sevcik, senior vice president of FPGA Products at Xilinx.

"As we see one third of our design wins requiring field upgradability, this solution offers a tremendous value to the growing number of embedded systems designers".

Developers are able to use the 405GP reference design to jump start system and software application development before their own coprocessing hardware is available, saving valuable time in the development process.

The platform includes an FPGA daughter card codeveloped with Xilinx that plugs onto the 405GP motherboard, enabling users to reconfigure or reprogram the application at any time.

Other key benefits include detailed schematics, VxWorks board support package, and pre-integration with all of Wind River's hardware-assisted development tools.

The 405GP reference design is available immediately.
