At the heart of this solution is the base station, providing shared network access, firewall security and encryption.
With multiple Ethernet and wireless ports and network address translation, the device can create a private network in which up to 50 users share a single global network address.
Using Wind River's Tornado for Home Gateways software platform, Apple was able to boost the networking performance of the Airport Base Station and add new features such as Radius, which enables schools and businesses to centrally manage user access control.
Wind River also provided development hardware and support services to assist Apple in customising and testing the software in parallel with hardware development.
Wind River's complete solution allowed Apple to deliver this final product in record time.
'With the introduction of AirPort, the first affordable and easy-to-use IEEE802.11b product, Apple has led the wireless revolution', said Greg Joswiak, senior director of hardware product marketing at Apple.
'Including key technologies from great companies like Wind River have enabled us to take the new AirPort basestation to the next generation with an even more powerful and flexible architecture'.
