Raychem has won a contract to supply the specialist wiring cables for control, communications and weapon systems on the new U-212 Class submarines being built for the German Navy

Raychem, a unit of Tyco Electronics Corporation, has won a contract to supply the specialist wiring cables for control, communications and weapon systems on the new U-212 Class submarines, being built for the German Navy by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) of Kiel Working closely with the shipbuilders and electrical equipment suppliers during the development phase, Raychem's Wire and Harnessing Division custom-designed specialised Raychem cables with the specific electrical and screening performance required for connecting the mission critical marine on-board equipment

In addition to Raychem 44 Wire being installed throughout the vessel, low fire hazard systems are being installed in the critical internal areas that require consideration for crew safety and the protection of vital electronics equipment.

Here, high performance 100G Wire in a low profile, lightweight zero halogen jacket provides both the safety requirements and offers the advantages of space and weight savings.

Cabling external to the pressure hull features Raychem's Rayolin jacketing material, which maintains its integrity even when subjected to continuous, long-term sea water exposure.

Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft AG (HDW) is building four Class U-212 submarines, which feature a very quiet hybrid engine and the capability to remain submerged for very long periods.

Christian Kiermaier, Key Account Manager (Marine) for the Raychem Wire and Harness Division in Germany stated: "We are delighted to have been involved from an early stage.

These critical military applications provide us with the opportunity to demonstrate our world class expertise in cable design and to make a real contribution to the project as a supplier partner".
