On June 25th 2003 TUV Product Service held an open day at its UK headquarters in Titchfield as part of this year's celebrations marking half a century of testing and certification services to UK manufacturers.
Almost 80 clients and members of the press joined the company's management and employees for a day which mixed business with pleasure.
Inaugurated as Plessey Components Laboratory Ilford in the year of the Queen's coronation and the first successful ascent of Everest, the first facility was opened in Titchfield in 1963.
In 1997, the company merged with specialist provider of telecommunications testing and certification services BABT.
In 2001 BABT was integrated into TUV Product Service.
Together, the two businesses now employ 190 people at Titchfield and four other offices in the UK, 1000 worldwide, and are part of the global TUV Suddeutschland group which has offices in 130 countries worldwide and 11,600 employees.
Over the years, TUV Product Service has shaped itself into a highly focused organisation with the three-fold objective of helping telecommunications and electro-technical equipment suppliers to access global markets on time, on budget, and with a better product; supporting telecommunications operators in meeting their quality and revenue assurance targets; and assisting government bodies in fostering innovation and higher productivity in British industry.
The company's current methodology, and plans for the future, recognise that all technology organisations address a global and fast-changing marketplace, and wrestle with a bewildering array of regulatory requirements and ever-shrinking product lifecycles.
"Faster to market with the right product and/or service" has never had a more pressing or universal relevance.
Specific strategies to meet the needs of the market include an increasing move toward provision of knowledge and problem solving solutions, a new approach to compliance reflecting the requirement for faster, more flexible compliance services, the provision of compliance advice from the concept of a product throughout its lifecycle, and market access consultancy.
TUV Product Service's wide-ranging capability is based on a pool of specialised technical and market knowledge in consumer products, electro-machinery, financial services, medical-health-sports, IT, telecommunications, transportation, defence, and the public sector.
Its services include product testing, product certification, management system certification, consultancy, international compliance management, regulatory services, and billing system audit and assessment.
