Updates to two of the most widespread product safety standards mean that manufacturers should consider re-evaluating their existing product ranges.
Newer editions have replaced both EN/IEC60950:1992 (covering office/IT equipment) and EN/IEC61010-11993 (measurement and test equipment).
The old versions will become obsolete on 2nd January 2005 and 2nd July 2005, respectively.
The majority of office, IT and laboratory equipment already on sale in markets like the EU, the USA, Russia, Japan or China, has been certified to the older standards.
As these standards will soon become outdated, manufacturers are recommended to have affected products re-evaluated to the new requirements in order to maintain compliance with national laws and to guard against potential legal problems.
It is recommended that independent third parties like TUV International carry out these re-evaluations in order to increase the credibility of the tests.
