Ajar is a new applications platform for mobile phone manufacturers and network operators.
Ajar provides the complete applications software required for the development of competitive feature phones plus a set of design tools that enables significant differentiation between phones through the rapid customisation of the man machine interface (MMI) and the addition of new applications and services.
Richard Fry, Sales and Marketing Director at TTPCom explained: "Applications sell mobile phones and increasingly, network operators compete via the services and applications offered.
However, the traditional handset is a closed system that doesn't provide the flexibility to change or expand content as new applications become available.
With Ajar the mobile phone becomes a dynamic product that can be changed, added to and upgraded.
This has very real benefits for both the phone manufacturer and network operator and enables them to collaborate more closely".
"For the handset manufacturer Ajar provides a solid applications core that can be reused across different phones and can be customised to capture new trends, to develop specialised niche products and to suit the ever-changing needs of the operators.
For the network operator Ajar provides an opportunity to take more control of the content of the phone, to download new services quickly to users and to develop a consistent brand image across a complete range of handsets".
He continued, "The MMI design tools that are a key feature of Ajar are so flexible that we will see phone manufacturers customising the look and feel of their phones to meet the branding requirements of each and every network operator that they work with".
The Ajar platform delivers a suite of the latest applications technology including Java, unified messaging service with multimedia messaging service (MMS) and email client, WAP2.0, digital camera support, embedded and downloadable wireless games and multimedia content.
Customers will be provided with an annual upgrade to ensure that the applications suite is always up to date.
All applications are pre-integrated, providing a fast time to market and low development risk.
In addition a secure download capability means that this feature set is dynamic, and users, manufacturers and operators can add new services and applications to the device.
Ajar is fully compatible with TTPCom's proven GSM/GPRS/Edge/3GPP protocol stacks and as such provides a complete system from application to antenna.
This protocol software is fully compatible with silicon from TTPCom's semiconductor partners.
Neil Werdmuller, Applications Product Manager at TTPCom commented: "Ajar is neither fully closed, and therefore inflexible, nor fully open, with the potential branding and security problems that this presents.
In addition it does not require additional processing power and so can be implemented in all levels of handset from entry level to high-end smartphones.
The flexibility that Ajar brings to the handset is absolutely key to keeping pace with a fast changing market, enabling new services to be added as soon as they become available".
