HDD provides 750Gbyte storage in 9.5mm profile
Toshiba Storage Device Division (SDD) has brought out a HDD capable of delivering 750Gbyte of storage capacity in a two-platter design.
The 5,400rpm MK7559GSXP provides a level of storage capacity primarily supported until now by large form-factor 3.5in (89mm) HDDs in a device with a profile of only 9.5mm, making it ideal for integration into premium notebooks, high-end PCs and portable external hard-disk drives.
Its introduction sets a new standard for small form-factor technology and expands Toshiba's mainstream mobile HDD product line into the highest capacity segment of the 2.5in HDD market, which IDC has forecast to grow by 29.2 per cent by 2012.
The MK7559GSXP offers a market-leading areal density of 541.4Gbit/in, which enables OEMs to develop new products such as premium notebook-computers that can offer unprecedented levels of internal storage while retaining an attractive slimline design.
This HDD also ensures optimum performance even when operating data-intensive applications through a high-internal transfer rate of up to 1,363Mb/s.
Its combination of high storage capacity and fast, reliable operation means the MK7559GSXP is ideally suited for multimedia applications that require the rapid transfer of large amounts of data.
This extends its possible uses from high-end personal computing and data storage into the set-top box and personal video recorder (PVR) segments, which IDC has predicted will grow by 84 per cent by 2012.
The MK7559GSXP can store up to 213,000 photos, 187,500 digital music files or 300 hours of DVD quality video.
Launched alongside the MK7559GSXP is the MKxx59GSM line of HDDs, which delivers high levels of storage across a three-platter design that has been optimised for targeting the growing market for external hard-disk drives.
The MK1059GSM and MK7559GSM provide one terabyte (TB) and 750GB respectively of storage over three platters.
As IDC has predicted that the market for external hard drives will grow by 56.1 per cent by 2012, the launch of the MKxx59GSM represents an opportunity for OEMs wishing to benefit from this trend.
In addition, this line of HDDs also addresses escalating demand for capacity and portability in gaming notebooks, mobile workstations and other applications with high storage requirements.
To deliver these next-generation storage capabilities, Toshiba has implemented Advanced Sector Format Technology, which uses 4K byte-per-sector formatting and improved error-correcting code functions to provide maximum error detection and more efficient use of the storage surface area.
This product line's design continues Toshiba's commitment to reducing its environmental impact, which includes the use of lower-power consumption techniques and components that reduce reliance on harmful chemicals, materials and compounds.
Its manufacture is fully compliant with RoHS regulation and is halogen-free.
Toshiba's MK7559GSXP and MKxx59GSM series are scheduled to ship to distributors and integrators in spring 2010.
Design samples are currently available to system manufacturers.
