TVs feature single-chip DVB and MHEG-5
Beko Elektronik has announced that it is basing its next generation of integrated digital television (iDTV) products around a system-on-chip (SoC) digital television solution from Toshiba Electronics
The new televisions will be the first iDTV products to use Toshiba's TC9040x 'Donau' series of single-chip Digital video broadcasting (DVB) and MHEG-5 processors in volume production. Beko is on target to produce around 10 million televisions in 2005, and will begin manufacturing its new range of 100Hz iDTV sets using Toshiba's processors towards the end of 2005.

Targeted at the UK market, these TVs will initially be hybrid products offering consumers integrated analogue and digital TV functionality.
Later the iDTV product portfolio will be expanded to other European countries in addition to implementing Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) functionality.
Toshiba's TC9040x 'Donau' series of processors are high-performance SoC devices designed to simplify the design and reduce the component count of iDTVs, set-top boxes, and other consumer electronics products such as personal video recorders (PVRs) and combination hard disk/DVD recorder systems.
These devices combine the company's Media embedded Processor (MeP) architecture with a powerful 64-bit embedded RISC host processor to create multimedia SoCs with compute performances of up to 650MIPS (at 180MHz).
The MeP architecture effectively frees the host processor from compute-intensive DVB and multimedia processing tasks and allows designers to choose cost-optimised solutions for DVB applications.

Commenting on the choice of Toshiba's Donau platform, Mr Mustafa Dost, Beko's vice president, states: "We needed a solution that allowed us to quickly, easily and cost-effectively incorporate DVB and MHEG-5 functionality into our next-generation iDTV products.
By delivering all of the key functionality on a single chip, Toshiba's TC9040x processors help us to achieve this objective, while reducing component count and inventory and improving long-term product reliability."
Thomas Kuschel, Toshiba's Consumer IC marketing manager, adds: "By using single-chip SoCs to implement DVB and MHEG-5 or MHP functionality, Toshiba has provided Beko with a solution that facilitates rapid design, prototyping and manufacture and that addresses the company's requirements in terms of technology, performance, reliability and cost."
