Back-end processor improves TV performance
A new I2C-based analogue back-end television processor allows designers to dramatically improve performance and picture quality while helping to save space, lower power consumption and minimise costs
Toshiba's TA1360AFG/ANG TV high-performance back-end processor is ideal for double scan (100/120Hz), digital and high-definition television (HDTV) applications. Representing a complete I2C bus-controlled solution for analogue back-end processing, the devices are fully compatible with all global signal formats and can be used with both 4:3 and 16:9 tubes.

The TA1360AFG/ANG signal and sync processor has a bandwidth of more than 30MHz at -3dB and incorporates a number of colour, brightness and contrast functions that work together to optimise picture quality.
A dynamic gamma correction circuit improves contrast in high, medium and low light images, while a colour detail enhancer (CDE) prevents loss of resolution in deep colour pictures.
An analogue implementation of a luminance transient improver (LTI) function enhances picture sharpness and offers benefits over digital alternatives by eliminating the need for larger, power hungry ICs and external memory.
Other onboard functions include dynamic Y/C compensation, green stretch (for enhanced low saturation green), a white pulse limiter that prevents white text 'flare', and a black stretch characteristic to improve contrast in near-black pictures.
The processor also features a flesh colour function to correct skin tones.
The TA1360AFG/ANG can be used as a pure picture improvement IC, which can be added to a television's existing back-end processing systems.
This allows rapid implementation as the deflection stage of the television can remain unchanged.
Alternatively, the TA1360AFG/ANG can be used to replace existing back-end processing ICs in new televisions or products where a complete redesign of the deflection stage is possible.
The TA1360AFG/ANG signal and sync processor is supplied in an 80-pin QFP and a 56-pin SDIP.
