The Lassen SQ is an ultra-low-power miniature GPS receiver module for mobile device applications. The high performance of the Lassen SQ, combined with its low power consumption and small size, enables engineers, OEMs and system integrators to add GPS capabilities to mobile devices while minimising the impact on their size and battery life. The Lassen SQ combines Trimble's FirstGPS technology along with a powerful microprocessor in a miniature form factor for a complete position velocity and time (PVT) solution.
The highly integrated module is a miniature board containing a GPS hardware core based on Trimble's Colossus RF ASIC and IO-S digital signal processor (DSP) design and a 32bit RISC CPU.
Flash memory provides onboard data storage for a complete processing capability.
The Lassen SQ gives engineers the flexibility to achieve significant reductions in power consumption when adding GPS functionality.
Even in continuous operation the Lassen SQ only requires 100mW of power which compares favourably to the 500mW or more typically required by other GPS receivers.
This means, for example, that two penlight batteries can power the module for more than 40 hours of continuous operation which is 10 times longer than the average cell phone's continuous talk time.
With a 26 x 26mm form factor, engineers can also easily fit GPS functionality into a variety of mobile devices including cell phones, PDAs, digital cameras, handheld computers, in-car navigation and vehicle tracking systems, data recorders and portable instrumentation devices without significantly impacting their size.
The Lassen SQ is compatible with active 3.3V DC antennas.
A number of models are available depending on the application, including: an ultra-compact embedded antenna, a compact unpackaged antenna and a compact packaged antenna with a magnetic mount for movable installation.
A full development kit is available for the Lassen SQ which includes the module mounted on an RS232 interface board in a durable metal enclosure, a magnetic mount antenna, an AC/DC power adapter, a serial interface cable, a reference manual, and GPS toolkit software for communication with the GPS module.
