After designing custom and semicustom embedded computers for years, Techsol is now offering a standard, off-the-shelf computer with a Sun-certified Java Virtual Machine
An unnamed customer has chosen the Medallion CPU module to power an automatic vehicle location (AVL) application. Using the Medallion development kit the customer was able to quickly develop a proof of concept prototype for demonstration of its AVL application. Next, the customer designed their application platform: a custom IO board powered by the Medallion CPU module.
The IO board integrates a GPS receiver module, a cellular radio module, sensors, plus the Medallion CPU module onto a single circuit board.
The customer estimates that it saved over 6 months and thousands of dollars just in hardware development costs using this approach.
It also enabled it to develop a lower-cost four-layer circuit board rather than the costly eight-layer board that a fully custom solution would demand.

The SA2410 Medallion CPU module incorporates USB host and device, LCD and touch, MMC, IrDA, I2C, UARTs and a 32bit bus
"The key reasons that this customer chose the Medallion was the fact that it's a low-cost, feature-rich, high processing-power platform to which they could easily add their custom sensors and applications", stated Brian Empey, Techsol's President and CEO.
"The reduction in complexity allowed the customer to concentrate on porting and developing software features, such as text-to-speech".
In addition Medallion modules are delivered with the Linux OS preloaded, saving the customer more time and money.
The customer developed their applications on Linux workstations, then crosscompiled for the target Medallion processor (using Techsol's free tools) and downloaded the new code to the target device.
