Further strengthening its commitment to PCI Express architecture technology development and deployment, TI has released the first discrete PCI Express physical layer chip

Further strengthening its commitment to PCI Express architecture technology development and deployment, Texas Instruments has developed the first discrete PCI Express physical layer (PHY) chip, enabling PCI Express instrumentation and test equipment applications. TI's demonstration at the Spring 2004 Intel Developer Forum (IDF) will highlighted the robustness of TI's 1.0a PCI Express physical layer and PCI Express-to-PCI bridge solution.

The PHY, XIO1000, is the industry's first PCI Express 1.0a chip which supports transmit and receive bandwidths of 2.5Gbit/s.

TI's PCI Express roadmap of products will be a key enabler for the deployment of PCI Express applications requiring a discrete physical layer (PHY), which are expected to be shipping in many PCs this year.

PCI Express is expected to be the predominant PC I/O architecture over the next several years.

'PCI Express discrete PHYs are crucial for enabling applications to take full advantage of PCI Express bandwidth and flexibility.

We're pleased that TI is showing its PCI Express 1.0a PHY at IDF', said Bob Gregory, Director, Initiatives Planning, in the Desktop Platforms Group at Intel Corporation.

'We see strong customer demand for PCI Express solutions, and the PCI Express PHY is the foundation of TI's portfolio of products', said David Peterman, Business Manager, Computer Connectivity Solutions, TI.

'We are pleased with the robustness of the PHY, which enables us to accelerate our development plans'.

TI's roadmap includes a complete portfolio of products built for the PCI Express architecture, enabling chip-to-chip interconnect, I/O interconnect for adapter cards and an I/O attach point to other interconnects such as PCI, 1394 (FireWire) and USB.

Other planned products include PCI Express switch and physical layer devices, as well as devices supporting the 'Express Card' specification (formerly known as 'Newcard'), a small form factor successor to PC Card.

These, along with existing TI devices such as CardBus, 1394 and USB, will provide designers a complete portfolio of interface options from TI.
