Single chip fronts up motor control
The ADS7869 is a complete analogue front end designed specifically for motor control applications
The ADS7869 integrates three 12bit, 1Msample/s A/D convertors, including seven sample-and-hold circuits and 12 fully differential input channels. This combination allows high throughput and simultaneous sampling for motor control applications, such as multi-axis positioning, motion control and robotics.

The ADS7869 includes three fully differential inputs for phase current measurement with each input connected to a window comparator and a sign comparator.
This allows correction of current distortion caused by dead time, as well as user selectable level of overcurrent protection.
For position sensor analysis, four sign comparators connected to four input channels and two 16bit up/down counters are incorporated along with synchronous and asynchronous sampling to enable precision encoder measurement and position control.
Key specifications include 12bit system offset and gain adjustment for every channel, +/-1LSB integral nonlinearity (INL), +/-0.65LSB differential nonlinearity (DNL) and -78dB distortion (10kHz).
The device has a very flexible digital interface.
Two standard parallel port operating modes, a serial peripheral interface (SPI) and a specialised serial interface with three data lines (VECANA01 mode) are provided.
The ADS7869 can easily interface to most digital signal processors (DSPs) or microcontrollers.
The ADS7869 is available now from TI and its authorised distributors.
The device is packaged in a TQFP-100 and is priced from $14.60 in 1000-piece quantities (suggested resale price).
