Chipset to speed data over cdma2000
Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics are developing a standard cdma2000 1xEV-DV (1x evolution for data and voice) solution
Bringing high-speed Internet connectivity and advanced multimedia services to next-generation CDMA devices, Texas Instruments and STMicroelectronics are developing a standard CDMA2000 1xEV-DV (1x evolution for data and voice) solution. ST and TI plan to jointly market the solution to manufacturers worldwide looking to develop cdma2000 1xEV-DV mobile Internet handsets.

'Clearly TI and ST have become very aggressive in the CDMA chipset market, and the introduction of the 1xEV-DV solution places them at the leading edge of CDMA technology', said Will Strauss, President of market research firm Forward Concepts.
'CDMA wireless shipments are dominant in the US and have been growing in worldwide market share, making this an attractive market for both companies'.
This cdma2000 1xEV-DV solution will provide users with broadband capabilities via their cellphones, PDAs, and other mobile devices, enabling extremely high-speed Internet connectivity at ten times the speeds provided by current cdma2000 1x and GPRS solutions.
The standard provides very efficient, high-speed packet data capabilities with typical sector throughput ranging from 420Kbit/s 1.7Mbit/s and peak datarates up to 3.1Mbit/s.

By providing enhanced data throughput, 1xEV-DV will support traditional remote Internet access, as well as drive advanced multimedia services for consumers.
These multimedia services include streaming video, video conferencing and interactive online gaming.
For wireless operators, 1xEV-DV provides the flexibility to dynamically manage voice and data traffic for the most efficient use of their wireless spectrum, enabling new multimedia services that will create additional revenue-generating opportunities.
'This technology will make new applications such as high quality streaming video, video on demand, and video telephony more efficient and customer- friendly', said Oliver Valente, Vice President of Technology Development at Sprint.
'In addition, EV-DV technology will enhance traditional data applications such as email, Internet browsing and games.
It also will allow carriers to make the most efficient use of their spectrum for data applications'.
This solution will support the Release C 1xEV-DV standard.
Release C is the first 1xEV-DV standard to be commercialised and provides forward link communication enhancements - such as high-speed packet data transmission from the basestation to the handset.
As the market develops, TI and ST will provide 1xEV-DV solutions to support the Release D standard, which primarily enhances the data speeds for the reverse link communication - from the handset to the basestation.
TI and ST's core CDMA chipsets scale to 1xEV-DV, allowing early adoption of the standard.
This cdma2000 1xEV-DV solution is expected to be available for sampling in early 2004, and shipments of production-qualified devices are expected by the end of 2004.
cdma2000 1xEV-DV gives operators the flexibility to dynamically manage voice and data traffic for the most efficient use of limited spectrum.
The standard supports integrated real-time voice and video with non-real-time packet data services such as FTP and HTTP, while also supporting simultaneous voice and data services for a single subscriber.
cdma2000 1xEV-DV is the evolution of IS-2000 1X and provides backward compatibility with previous cdma2000 and IS-95 releases.
