Convertor operates in
buck and boost modes
Texas Instruments has extended its popular REG710x family of switched-capacitor buck-boost convertors by introducing a 1mm-high device in a ThinSOT-23 package
The tiny convertor supports 30mA of output current for white light emitting diode (LED) backlights and liquid crystal displays (LCDs) in single-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) powered mobile applications such as cell phones, electronic games, handheld meters and portable medical equipment. The REG71055 buck-boost convertor maintains a fixed output voltage of 5.5V across input voltages from 3.0 to 5.5V to drive white LEDs in single-cell Li-ion applications.

Webcast to address wireless power optimisation
Texas Instruments and Avnet Electronics Marketing will present a live Analog eLab webcast on 'Optimising power in low-power wireless systems' on 12th April 2006
Further saving power and battery life, the device features a quiescent current of typically 65uA.
Designed to reduce system size and cost, TI's REG710x series of convertors automatically steps the input voltage up or down to maintain the specified output of 2.5, 2.7, 3, 3.3, 5 or 5.5V, eliminating the need to combine a boost convertor and low-dropout (LDO) voltage regulator to perform the same task.
The REG710x convertors, which do not require any inductors, employ a 1MHz switching frequency using ceramic capacitors, eliminating the need for expensive tantalum capacitors.
The devices include overtemperature and overcurrent protection and automatically limit inrush current to protect the system and further suppress electromagnetic interference while maintaining design simplicity.
The REG71055 is available in volume today in a 1mm high, six-pin, 3 x 3mm ThinSOT-23 package.
Suggested resale pricing is $0.90 each in quantities of 1000.
Evaluation modules for TI's REG710x convertors are available in less than 24 hours through TI's power website.
