LG Electronics has selected TI's highly efficient TPA2005D1 Class-D audio power amplifier for four brand new CDMA phones

LG Electronics has selected TI's highly efficient TPA2005D1 Class-D audio power amplifier for four brand new CDMA phones (models LG-KV1300, LG-SV130, LG-SV140 and LG-SV9140). The TPA2005D1 enables longer talk-times and higher output power for gaming, polyphonic ringers and speakerphone applications in LG's new CDMA phones.

Searching for newer and more efficient technologies, mobile phone companies such as LG are moving from Class-AB audio power amplifiers - the most commonly used type of audio amplifier for mobile phones - to Class D audio power amplifiers to achieve higher efficiencies and higher output for added features.

'We chose TI's TPA2005D1 because of its superior efficiency and good audio performance', said Kim Yeong-Soub, Project Leader for the LG-KV1300 cellphone at LG.

TI expects cellphone vendors to quickly move to Class-D audio power amplifiers as the awareness for this technology increases and extended talk-time and more speaker volume becomes a key differentiating factor for cellphone manufacturers.

'With Class-D's price and level of maturity in the audio power amplifier market, we can offer our cell phone customers the most efficient audio power solutions and provide higher output power at a cost point that is very competitive compared to Class-AB', said Nicholas Holland, Product Marketing Manager for audio power amplifiers at TI.

In addition to higher efficiency and power, TI's class D audio amplifiers can easily be integrated into mobile telephony systems without impacting electromagnetic interference (EMI).

'Through rigorous laboratory testing, LG proved that when correct board layout is applied, there is no impact to the receiver sensitivity or other EMI related issues', said Shin Jae-Jun, Project Leader for the LG-SV130, LG-SV140 and LG-SV9140 range of CDMA products.

In addition to TI's TPA2005D1 Class-D audio power amplifier, the new LG cellphones also integrate TI's TMS320VC5510 DSP and SN74LVC245 octal bus transceiver.

The C5510 is a 200MHz device that delivers up to 400MIPS.

It is designed for products that require an optimised combination of power, performance and area, making it an ideal choice for CDMA phones.

TI's LVC technology is a high performance, low voltage logic family that offers 24mA current drive and 6.5ns maximum propagation delays for driver operations.

The TPA2005D1 is available today in the 2.5 x 2.5mm MicroStar BGA package and in the 3 x 3mm QFN package from TI and its authorised distributors.

Furthermore, the QFN package for the TPA2005D1 Class-D Audio amplifier has been qualified for Pb-free (lead-free) soldering, which will become a key requirement for electronics manufacturers in the future.

Suggested resale pricing in quantities of 1000 is $0.49.
