Two new 10bit octal ADCs provide simultaneous conversion of up to eight differential analogue signals at 40 and 65Msample/s

Extending its family of the industry's only high-speed, eight-channel analogue-to-digital convertors (ADCs), Texas Instruments (TI) has released two new 10bit, octal ADCs that provide simultaneous conversion of up to eight differential analogue signals at 40 and 65Msample/s. Offering the lowest power per channel of any high-speed, 10bit ADC currently on the market, these data convertors provide the speed, resolution and low power required in multi-channel applications such as portable ultrasound and portable instrumentation.

'By integrating eight low-power, high-speed ADCs into a single package, designers of portable systems will benefit from a significant reduction in board space, lower power requirements, shorter development time and reduced system costs', said Ed Fullman, Product Marketing Manager for TI's high-speed data convertor products.

The ADS5121 (40Msample/s, 360mW ADC power dissipation) and ADS5122 (65Msample/s, 522mW ADC power dissipation) guarantee no missing codes and feature an exceptional signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 60 and 59dB, respectively.

The devices drastically reduce per-channel space to just 32mm2, saving up to 60% of the board space required by competing solutions.

Using these data convertors, designers will be able to build more features into smaller, more affordable systems with longer battery life - enabling advanced diagnostics in a broader range of environments around the world.

Both devices operate from a single 1.8V supply, while offering 1.8 and 3.3V digital I/O flexibility.

All eight channels share a common clock for simultaneous sampling and feature individual standby pins that allow the user to power-down any number of ADCs for additional power savings.

A peak-to-peak differential input range of 1V maintains signal integrity, and a common internal or external voltage reference allows matching between channels.

The ADS5121 and ADS5122 are both packaged in TI's 257-lead plastic MicroStar ball grid array (BGA), allowing a sample rate upgrade from 40 to 65Msample/s.

The ADS5121 is priced from $37.00 in 1000-piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).

The ADS5122 is priced from $40.80 in 1000-piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
