Miserly consumption for RS485 transceiver
A new low-power RS485 transceiver cuts power consumption to less than 0.3mA in active mode
Supplying system designers with a new level of flexibility, Texas Instruments has a new low-power RS485 transceiver that cuts power consumption to less than 0.3mA in active mode. The new transceiver features true fail-safe receiver inputs and 16kV HBM ESD protection levels ideal for demanding applications in noisy environments, such as energy meter networks, industrial automation and telecomms racks.

TI's HVD3082E half-duplex transceiver is designed for RS485 databus networks.
Powered by a 5V supply, it is fully compliant with the TIA/EIA485A standard.
With controlled output transition times, this device is suitable for signalling rates up to 200Kbit/s over long twisted-pair cables and features a true fail-safe receiver design that detects and corrects bus open, idle and short conditions.
When in the inactive shutdown mode, the supply current drops to typically 1nA, making these devices ideal for power-sensitive applications.
The SN65HVD3082E and SN75HVD3082E are available now from TI and its authorised worldwide distributors in 8-pin SOIC packages.
