FireWire turns to home networking
Texas Instruments has released the industry's first 1394b (FireWire) products enabling home networking of consumer, computing and audio/video (A/V) devices
The availability of IEEE1394b devices enables much greater distances and higher performance for home networking and entertainment applications such as whole house video and audio. The plug-and-play, quality of service and other ease-of-use features inherent to FireWire provide consumers with a user-friendly home entertainment networking system.

Webcast to address wireless power optimisation
Texas Instruments and Avnet Electronics Marketing will present a live Analog eLab webcast on 'Optimising power in low-power wireless systems' on 12th April 2006
'People are spending more time in their homes enjoying video games, DVDs, High Definition TV and personal A/V content.
The desire for connecting and sharing these applications among multiple users in the home is increasing, and we see a strong demand for 1394b enabled products to move multimedia, internet protocol and data at high rates over great distances within the home', said Belal Ahmad, Business Manager for TI's Consumer Electronics Networking group.
The TSB41BA3 is a three-port bilingual physical layer (PHY) device capable of speeds up to 400Mbit/s, compliant with the approved version of the IEEE1394b-2002 specification.
This IEEE1394b-2002 PHY increases communication distances up to 100m over Cat5, glass optical fibre (GOF) or plastic optical fibre (POF) cabling, ensuring a much better user experience in high-speed data transfers and multimedia networking.
The TSB41BA3 is backward-compatible with 1394a devices and supports both the data strobe encoding scheme of IEEE1394a-2000 and the new 8B/10B encoding scheme for 1394b-2002.
It also allows for any cable topology to be used, as loops will be automatically detected and corrected.
TI has also released the TSB17BA1 transceiver, a companion device to the TSB41BA3, enabling a 1394b home networking solution over Cat5 cable.
The TSB17BA1 is a one-port, 100Mbit/s transceiver specifically designed for 1394b connections over Cat5 cable.
Design-in support includes datasheets, reference schematics, implementation notes, layout examples with guidelines, software recommendation and 1394b tools recommendations.
The TSB41BA3 is available today in an 80-pin PFP package in 1000-off quantities for $6.50.
The TSB17BA1 is available in a 24-pin TSSOP package in 1000-off quantities for $2.50.
