High-current power modules
keep low profile
Texas Instruments has released a new series of 18A output, 5V input Excalibur plug-in power modules
The new PT5800 series of feature-rich power modules provides improved levels of performance in a low-profile, 18-pin package that is one-third smaller than the previous product generation. The modules are ideal for point-of-load applications that use high-performance digital signal processors, microprocessors, ASICs and FPGAs in communications, networking and computing.

TI's PT5800 modules operate from a 5V input bus and include output voltage options as low as 1.0V direct current.
Other key features include: 94% efficiency; a pre-bias startup capability; +/-5% output margin control; differential remote sense; output voltage adjustment; on/off inhibit; short-circuit and overcurrent protection; and overtemperature protection.
The PT5800 modules are packaged in an 18-pin small-profile Excalibur copper case that requires no heatsink, and offers the advantages of solderability and a small footprint (0.736in2 for suffix 'N').
Measuring 2 x 1in, these Excalibur cases meet critical 8mm height tolerances in horizontal mounting and provide excellent thermal dissipation.
PT5800 power modules are now available in volume from TI and its authorised distributors.
Pricing per module in quantities of 1000 is $22.55.
