Leading European vendor of embedded modem solutions, COM One, has developed a low-cost low-power modem solution based on TI's TMS320C54V90 chipset

The SM 56000 IP will enable end equipment such as PDAs, point-of-sale terminals, vending machines, meters and other medical or industrial equipment to connect directly to the Internet through any PSTN line. The solution, which integrates both the modem and Internet protocol, can easily evolve in the future and have new functionalities added to it due to the use of a standard TI TMS320C54xT DSP core.

'The decisive advantages of the TI chipset solution are its low power consumption, standard DSP core and very small form factor at a low cost', said Thierry Marsaud, COM One Technical Manager.

'This new two-chip solution eliminates the need for off-chip memory and integrates the digital portion of the DAA on chip, thereby decreasing the conventional embedded modem solution from five or six chips to only two.

We can also easily add our own software stacks such as TCP/IP, SMTP and FTP'.

'We are very pleased that COM One has chosen Texas Instruments', said Pascal Dorster, Worldwide C5000T Marketing Manager.

'By combining TI's powerful DSP core technology with COM One's hardware and software expertise, we are now able to offer a certified solution that is in complete alignment with the growing needs of Internet access devices'.

The SM 56000 IP offers a plug and play solution, which is easy for end-equipment manufacturers to integrate into their products.

The SM 56000 IP is precertified and can easily be customised, allowing for faster time-to-market and product differentiation.

The upgradability and code compatibility of TI's C54x product family, on which the modem is based, enables the joint TI/COM One solution to evolve in the future with new features as these become available.

COM One will be demonstrating the SM 56000 IP modem solution on the TI stand at Embedded World in Nuremberg from 18th to 20th February.
