A new family of ultra-low-on-resistance power switches enables seamless transition between two power sources, such as a single-cell lithium-ion battery and a wall adapter

Ideal for mobile phones, PDAs and other handhelds, the controlled output voltage transition times of the new devices allow for a seamless supply transition without requiring a large output (hold-up) capacitor. Designers of mobile applications can now achieve a voltage drop of less than 0.05V at 300mA for higher efficiency and longer battery life, compared with the 0.3-0.7V drop seen in a typical two-diode 'or' connection implementation.

Designed to maximise power efficiency, TI's TPS211x family of two-input, one-output power multiplexers has two internal high-side power mosfets with on-resistance as low as 84mohm typical (TPS2111/3/5) to 120mohm typical (TPS2110/2/4).

The series of devices, which operates from 2.8 to 5.5V and delivers up to 1A, offers a comprehensive set of features and options to simplify design and provide added flexibility.

Select devices have manual switching capabilities using the D0 and D1 control lines, as well as an 'autoswitching' mode where the switchover is automatically set to the higher input voltage, or determined by a voltage threshold set by an external resistor divider if the device features an adjustable threshold.

Additional features include: a low standby current (0.5uA typical); low operating current (55uA typical); a switch status output option; user-programmable current limiting from 0.31 to 1.25A; thermal protection; inrush current control; and cross-conduction and reverse-conduction blocking; TI's TPS211x family of two-input, one-output power multiplexers are available now from Texas Instruments and its authorised distributors in an eight-pin thin shrink small outline package (TSSOP).

Suggested resale pricing for the TPS211x in quantities of 1000 units is $0.70.
