Complementary bipolar SiGe
process makes amps fly
Texas Instruments has released the first products in a new family of high-performance fixed-gain amplifiers it claims increase speed threefold over comparable devices
The new fixed-gain op amps are the first products to be manufactured using TI's breakthrough BiCom-III process, the industry's first complementary bipolar silicon-germanium (SiGe) process. The high bandwidth offered by the new devices will benefit wireless infrastructure equipments and state-of-the-art test equipment, and will make the new Class AB op amps attractive as alternatives to radio-frequency (RF) amps.

Operating from a single 3-5V power supply, the THS4300 family of amplifiers provides high bandwidth and low noise to key high-performance applications.
Wireless basestations, relay stations and other infrastructure equipments will be able to pack more channels with wider bandwidth into less space.
Advanced semiconductor test equipment will be able to keep pace with future generations of high-performance products that are now in development.
For the first time, many radio subsystems will be able to cost-effectively substitute Class AB op amps for Class A RF amps, enjoying increased power savings and increased part-to-part gain consistency for more relaxed tolerances in design and manufacturing.
The THS4302 high-speed op amp, the first of the new family of op amps to be released, features a bandwidth of 2.4GHz and a fixed gain of +5V/V.

Two other 2.4GHz devices are scheduled to follow in early 2003: the THS4301, with a fixed gain of +2V/V, and the THS4303, with a fixed gain of +10V/V.
Other releases in the family are planned, and other products based on the outstanding capabilities of the BiCom-III process are in development.
'The new THS4300 family of devices shows that TI is committed to driving analog technology to new levels of performance', said Jay Cameron, strategic marketing manager.
'Outstanding as these new devices are, they are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the exceptional performance that BiCom-III will provide to TI customers'.
With their high speed and low distortion, the THS4300 family of devices is well suited for driving high-resolution data convertors for a wide dynamic range in digital signal processing.
A third-order output intercept point (OIP3) of +46dBm into a 100ohm load at 100MHz ensures greater linearity with the same gain variation and reduced power as previous fixed-voltage op amps.
RF systems benefit from the low third-order intermodulation distortion (IMD3) of -90dBc at 100MHz with a 1V peak-peak signal envelope into a 100ohm load.
All of these features place the new THS4300 family of amplifiers at the leading edge of performance in targeted application areas.
Announced in mid-2002, TI's BiCom-III process focuses TI's state-of-the-art manufacturing technology on the future needs of high-performance systems.
The process is the first to integrate both NPN- and PNP-type bipolar transistors to take advantage of the exceptionally high speeds of SiGe.
The complementary bipolar transistors enable op amp and high-performance mixed-signal product designs to increase speed up to threefold while reducing noise by as much as one half.
Devices designed with the process operate much faster, over wider operating ranges, and with greater precision than anything else available.
TI's THS4302 high-speed, fixed-gain op amp is sampling now, with volume production scheduled by the end of 2002.
The THS4301 and THS4303 op amps are scheduled to sample by the end of 2002, with volume production scheduled during the first quarter of 2003.
All of the THS4300 series op amps are packaged in a 16-pin leadless MSOP PowerPad package.
Planned pricing for all of the THS4300 series op amps is $1.97 per device in quantities of 1000.
