Texas Instruments has been appointed to the board of directors of the Wi-Fi Alliance as the organisation's latest sponsor member, helping to promote and expand the global Wi-Fi market

TI has been a contributing general member of the Wi-Fi Alliance since its acquisition of Alantro Communications in September 2000 and now joins eleven other companies at the board level. Additionally, TI's ACX100-based reference designs for IEEE802.11b PC Card and access points (APs) have received Wi-Fi certification.

'Joining the Wi-Fi Alliance board allows TI to better address customer needs by working closer with other member companies to develop standards that drive Wi-Fi growth and adoption in a broader range of devices, such as PDAs and handsets', said Bill Carney, Director of Market Development for TI's Wireless Networking Business Unit and TI's board representative to the Wi-Fi Alliance.

'Wireless networking is a key business focus for TI.

We have invested heavily in R and D, test labs and product development to enable the growth of Wi-Fi through more affordable 802.11 solutions'.

TI's leading solution, the recently Wi-Fi certified ACX100, is a single-chip media access controller (MAC) and baseband processor for 802.11b applications.

Reference designs based on the chip are being used by major networking equipment manufacturers, including D-Link, Linksys, SMC Networks and US Robotics.

PC Cards, APs and routers with the ACX100 are currently being shipped in retail channels.
