Reducing power consumption and prolonging battery life in portable applications, Texas Instruments has developed the industry's first power interface switches compliant with the new CardBay/CardBus+ standard for PC Cards. The new dual- and single-slot switches are the first high-performance devices available to supply 1.8V for low-voltage operation of PC Cards and are well suited for systems including notebook and desktop computers, set-top boxes, PDAs, digital cameras and barcode scanners.

The TPS2228 provides a dual-slot power interface switch for CardBay/CardBus+ controllers with a serial interface, and the TPS2221 provides a single-slot switch for controllers with a parallel interface.
Both TPS222x devices support the distribution of 1.8, 3.3 and 5V to the PC Card slot, giving designers flexibility in system implementation.
To provide a complete solution, the devices offer fully integrated VCC and VPP/VCORE switching, with the capability of programming the VPP/VCORE outputs independently for compatibility with legacy systems.
Inputs compatible with TTL logic are offered for flexibility, and short-circuit and thermal protection help ensure system safety.
'As the first available CardBay interface switches, the TPS222x devices will facilitate the migration of the PC Card industry to the CardBay/Cardbus+ standard with its lower signalling voltage', said Jonathan Bearfield, TI's power interface business development manager.
'TI is already the top supplier in PC Card solutions, and we will continue to support the evolution of this market with innovative products like these'.
TI's new TPS2228 and TPS2221 CardBay switches are now available in volume.
The TPS2228 is offered in a thermally enhanced, space-saving 20-pin HTSSOP PowerPad package, with suggested pricing of $2.95 per unit in quantities of 1000.
In addition, the TPS2228 is offered in a standard surface-mount 30-pin SSOP package, with suggested pricing of $3.05 per unit in quantities of 1000.
The TPS2221 is offered in a thermally enhanced, space-saving 14-pin HTSSOP PowerPad package, with suggested pricing of $1.72 per unit in quantities of 1000.
