Video Networks has selected a complete and integrated silicon and software solution from TI to power its new HomeChoice set-top box

The new set-top box uses TI's field-proven customer premises equipment (CPE) physical layer (PHY) ADSL chipset, enabling Video Networks to quickly develop a high-performance, robust DSL product, while providing the versatility to add a wide variety of product-specific, differentiating features.

'TI's products are important elements within the STB that deliver the speed and processing power required to provide customers with high quality video-on-demand and Internet services', said Simon Hochhauser, Video Networks' CEO.

'We are delighted to be working with TI to ensure that our customers receive the best service available in a cost-effective manner'.

'Service providers are looking to add new features such as video over DSL and we are proud that Video Networks has chosen TI for their leading broadband interactive TV network in the UK', said Franz-Josef Leyrer, European manager of TI's Broadband Communications Group.

'Video Networks leverages the high performance and field-proven interoperability of TI's ADSL CPE PHY to confidently deploy leading-edge service into BT's ADSL network'.

Video Network's HomeChoice set-top box offers consumers access to a digital entertainment service with a broad selection of films, TV programmes and interactive services, as well as an always-on fast Internet service for the PC.

HomeChoice delivers films and programs from a central server through BT's Videostream, which provides a guaranteed quality of service down the existing telephone line to a small and discreet set-top box the size of a videocassette, and then to the TV set so that content can be watched at any time.

The telephone line is split to allow both the telephone and TV/Internet services to run simultaneously without disturbing each other.

Videostream content is delivered at 2Mbit/s.

Leveraging TI's expertise in digital and analogue integration to reduce total cost of materials, TI's ADSL CPE chipset helps Video Networks to provide affordable and high performance ADSL modems to consumers.

By using TI's integrated silicon and software solution, Video Networks has been able to provide its customers with a single, compact set-top box rather than the larger set-top box and broadband modem they required previously.

This single, small box also integrates TI's high-performance TMS320C6204T DSP, providing an MPEG4 decode engine that will allow in-the-field upgrading to MPEG4 video through a software download when content becomes widely available.

The robust interoperability of TI's solution allows Video Networks to deploy its service over BT's Videostream ADSL network in Greater London, with further expansion planned as Videostream becomes available elsewhere in the UK.

Video Networks and TI will be demonstrating the HomeChoice VOD service by DVD at the International Broadcasting Convention 2002 at the Amsterdam RAI from 13th to 17th September.
