Three new power management devices provide dual outputs for system and core voltages to help increase battery life

Three new power management devices from Texas Instruments provide dual outputs for system and core voltages to help increase battery life. The TPS61130 is the industry's first combination of a synchronous sepic step-up or step-down switching convertor with an LDO. The TPS61100 and TPS61120 devices are TI's first integrated combination of synchronous step-up DC/DC convertors with low dropout (LDO) linear regulators allowing the battery capacity to be used more efficiently.

Designers of a wide range of portable applications will benefit from the high efficiency, integration, small size and design flexibility offered by the new devices.

TI's new TPS6110x, TPS6112x and TPS6113x DC/DC convertor/LDO power management ICs offer a complete, cost-efficient power supply solution for systems powered by single-cell lithium and single- and dual-cell alkaline, NiCd and NiMH batteries.

Pulsewidth modulation (PWM) switching results in up to 95% conversion efficiency, prolonging battery life or lengthening time in use between charges.

An extremely low typical quiescent current of only 40uA saves power when the system is in operating mode.

A wide selection of output voltage options, as well as independent operation of the convertor and LDO, provide design flexibility for use in a variety of applications.

Integration of switching transistors and a 4 x 4mm quad flat package with no leads (QFN), also called a micro leadframe package (MLP), save board space and help simplify design.

'With the introduction of the new TPS611xx family, TI is driving power solutions to new levels of integration and packaging for portable applications', said Guenter Sporer, systems engineering manager for TI's DC/DC convertor product line.

'TI is making it easier for customers to design using TI solutions by providing an extensive portfolio of high performance power solutions for portable applications'.

TPS611xx devices can be used in a wide range of portable systems needing two or more voltage rails and are particularly well suited for designs based on platforms using TI's TMS320C55x DSPs, TI's MSP430 ultra-low-power microcontroller, or any other low power processors.

Typical applications include PDAs, MP3 players, digital still cameras, wireless phones and data networking, instrumentation and others.

The TPS6110x is designed as a cost-efficient solution for systems with one or two alkaline, NiCd or NiMH cells.

The device integrates a synchronous step-up (boost) convertor generating 1.5 to 5.5V with an LDO generating 0.9 to 3.6V that can be derived either from the convertor output or directly from the battery.

The boost convertor provides an output current of up to 200mA and operates with supply voltages down to 0.8V.

Both outputs can be either adjusted by an external resistor or placed internally on the chip.

A second, 'pushbutton' enabled input on the TPS6110x simplifies the design of startup circuitry to enable the device when it is in sleep mode.

A low-battery comparator provides an inexpensive way to detect the battery level of alkaline batteries.

These features, which are unusual in low-voltage power supply solutions, help reduce development costs and save time to market for portable systems.

The TPS6112x is designed for single-cell Li-ion and Li-polymer or dual-cell alkaline, NiMH and NiCd systems.

The device integrates a synchronous boost convertor generating 2.5 to 5.5V with an LDO generating 0.9 to 5.5V.

The boost convertor provides an output current of up to 400mA and operates with supply voltages down to 1.8V.

The flexibility of the device allows it to operate with either two outputs or two inputs, such as a battery and a USB supply.

Alternatively, the LDO can be used to filter the output of the switching convertor.

The TPS6113x is similar to the TPS6112x, except it contains the industry's first integration of a LDO with a synchronous sepic convertor that can function as either a step-up or step-down, boost or buck convertor.

This functionality, combined with a typical efficiency of 90%, enables the device to use battery capacity more effectively by drawing power throughout the complete voltage range of the battery.

All of the TPS611xx devices are available in volume today from TI and the company's authorised distributors.

The TPS6110x is initially available in a 20-pin thin shrink small outline package (TSSOP), and the TPS6112x and TPS6113x in a 16-pin TSSOP.

Availability of a 24-pin QFN for the TPS6110x and a 16-pin QFN for the TPS6112x and TPS6113x is scheduled for later in the third quarter of 2002.

Suggested pricing for the TPS611xx family of devices starts at $1.75 each in quantities of 1000 units.
