TYtelStar takes shortcut
to DAB receiver design

One of the largest DVD original design manufacturers in the world has entered the digital radio market with an affordable new hi-fi receiver based on the TI Eureka digital audio broadcast solution

TYtelStar, one of the largest DVD original design manufacturers in the world, has entered the fast-growing digital radio market with an affordable new high-fidelity (hi-fi) receiver based on the TI Eureka digital audio broadcast (DAB) solution. TYtelStar saved valuable time and resources in developing the DAB-2000 by using TI's DAB design - featuring a low-cost, low-power digital baseband and analogue chipset - and TI's worldwide technical support network.

'TI's DRE200 DAB solution simplified the development of our first digital radio receiver', said BW Kim, Director of the Research and Development Center at TYtelStar.

'TI's customer support and system-level expertise enabled TYtelStar to enter a new market quickly and offer an affordable product'.

The new hi-fi receiver is the first in a line of products TYtelStar will develop for the digital radio market.

The company plans to merge the company's traditional strengths in DVDs, satellite set-top boxes and other electronics devices with its newly developed experience in digital radio, resulting in next-generation convergence devices.

The DRE200 solution is currently being used in a variety of digital radio receiver products, including hi-fis, PCI cards, battery-operated handheld and portable tabletop radios.

The DAB solution provides everything a designer needs in order to build a low-power, cost-effective digital radio.

At the heart of TI's DRE200 solution is a low-power chipset consisting of a high-performance DSP-based digital baseband processor and a number of TI analogue products including converters, power management devices and passive devices.

An evaluation module based on the reference design is also available, allowing customers to work with an operational system from the beginning of the development process.

In addition, TI offers dedicated digital radio support in Korea to help customers like TYtelStar get their systems into production quicker with minimal development risk.

'We've been impressed by TYtelStar's ability to develop the DAB-2000 and use it as an entry into a new market', said Herman Ma, Asian market development manager at TI.

'We look forward to a successful launch of this hi-fi DAB tuner and to a continued relationship with TYtelStar'.

TYtelStar intends to continue their ODM strategy and is currently engaging with brand name manufacturers interested in retailing the digital receiver under their names.

TYtelStar's new hi-fi digital radio receiver is scheduled for production in July 2002, with planned Europe retail introduction by TYtelStar's customers in the third quarter of 2002.
