Eight convertors in
one save acquisition space
Texas Instruments is claiming an industry first with a high-speed A/D convertor that provides simultaneous conversion of up to eight differential analogue signals
Offering excellent low-noise characteristics, the new 10bit octal ADC quadruples the number of integrated channels over competitive dedicated ADC solutions. Systems with high channel counts, such as ultrasound and tape drives, will benefit from the fourfold reduction in ADC space enabled by the device, as well as lower power requirements, shorter development time and reduced system costs.

'The ADS5120 is the first product by any manufacturer that integrates so many high-speed ADCs while providing excellent low-noise characteristics', said Ed Fullman, strategic marketing manager for TI's high-speed data convertor products.
'Using TI's depth of design expertise and strength in manufacturing processes, we have succeeded in creating a state-of-the-art ADC solution that will satisfy our customers' requirements beyond their stated expectations'.
The ADS5120 simultaneously converts up to eight analogue inputs at 40Msample/s with 10bit resolution.

Differential 1V signalling ensures the stability of the analogue inputs while keeping power requirements low.
Crosstalk of 67dB makes adjacent channel signals almost immeasurable.
Using the ADS5120, designers of portable medical imaging applications will be able to build smaller, more affordable systems with greater resolution that enable medical personnel to use advanced diagnostics in a broader range of environments around the world.
The new device drastically reduces per-channel space to just 32mm2, saving up to 60% of the board space required by competing solutions.
In addition to offering low crosstalk, the ADS5120 guarantees no missing codes and features an exceptionally low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 57dB and an effective number of bits (ENOB), including distortion, of 9.3bit.
The ADS5120 operates from a single 1.8V supply, keeping total typical power consumption for an ADC channel to a mere 85mW.
All eight channels share a common clock, minimising external circuitry, and can be powered down individually for additional savings.
A peak-to-peak differential input range of 1V maintains signal integrity, and a common internal or external voltage reference allows matching between channels.
Digital I/O levels of 1.8 and 3.3V permit interface to common low-voltage digital logic.
The ADS5120 is available in a 257-lead plastic MicroStar ball grid array (BGA) with a mainstream lead pitch of 0.8 mm for ease of surface mounting in system manufacture.
The device is priced from $37.00 in 1000 piece quantities.
