Available now is the first complete analogue monitoring and control circuit for multichannel applications where high performance and small size are critical

Available now is the first complete analogue monitoring and control circuit for multichannel applications where high performance and small size are critical, such as pump laser current and thermoelectric cooler control in optical amplifiers and optical power monitoring for DWDM applications.

The AMC7820 from Texas Instruments integrates an eight-channel 12bit ADC, three 12bit DACs, nine operational amplifiers, a thermistor current source, an internal +2.5V reference and an SPI serial interface into a small TQFP-48 package.

This high level of integration allows designers to replace up to five discrete components, thus saving board space and reducing cost.

'The AMC7820 is the first multi-channel analog monitor/control device in the industry, period', said James Yang, strategic marketing engineer for TI's data acquisition products.

'By offering this type of integration and performance in a single-chip solution, the AMC7820 minimises customers' board space constraints and lowers the overall cost of bringing high-volume optical networks to the market'.

In DWDM applications, the AMC7820 can control one laser diode and one TEC, or either two laser diodes or two TECs (DWDM is a fibre-optic transmission technique which employs light wavelength to transmit data).

When configuring the op amps as transimpedance amplifiers, the AMC7820 works as an optical power monitor to detect up to eight optical channels.

In other applications, the device can be used as a multiple analogue channel monitor and controller.

The AMC7820's ADC monitors up to eight analogue signals (100Ksample/s), while the three DACs can be used to implement DSP-based or microcontroller-based digital setting and control.

The op amps can be configured for analog signal conditioning and control.

The current source is designed to drive external thermistor or other temperature sensors.

Typical power dissipation is 40mW.

For the ADC, the unbuffered analogue input range is 0 to +5V, and the buffered analogue common-mode input range is 0 to +3.8V.

For the DACs, the analogue output range is 0 to +2.5 or 0 to +5.0V.

The AMC7820 is fully specified and tested over the -40 to +85C temperature range.

The AMC7820 is packaged in a TQFP-48 and priced at $9.15 in 1000 piece quantities (suggested resale pricing).
