NEC and Matsushita Communication will integrate OMAP application processors from Texas Instruments in their 3G wireless multimedia handsets

'NEC and Matsushita Communication have helped pioneer the Japanese mobile handset market', said Alain Mutricy, TI vice president and general manager for TI's OMAP platform. 'With TI's OMAP1510 processors which offer the real-time signal processing functionality, both companies will enable handset users to enjoy a whole, new mobile experience where they can quickly and easily access critical business information, conduct video conference calls, watch movie trailers or play highly interactive games without sacrificing battery life'.

A leading supplier in mobile communications, NEC has been manufacturing mobile communications products, including cellular phones, PHS terminals, and pagers since the 1960s.

Today, as a top mobile handset supplier in Japan, NEC has supplied major infrastructure and handsets for W-CDMA service in Japan, which launched last year as the first 3G rollout worldwide.

NEC also has been involved in 3G field trials all over the world.

'TI has leveraged its wireless expertise to create truly advanced applications engines that offer a unique combination of performance, power efficiency and systems integration', said Tsutomu Nakamura, NEC Associate Senior Vice President and Executive General Manger for Mobile Terminals Operations Unit.

'NEC has been at the forefront of 3G market activity and these capabilities will become increasingly important as we continue to converge voice, data and multimedia functionality in our devices'.

Matsushita Communication specialises in three business areas: mobile communications, automotive multimedia, and system solutions.

The company has been leading the industry especially in the mobile communications business.

It also supplied the world's first handsets with television functionality and basestations for W-CDMA service in Japan, which launched last year.

'We expect TI's OMAP processors, which can process cutting-edge, high bandwidth applications, to contribute to create a new mobile Internet market', said Osamu Waki, Matsushita Communication Board of Director and Chief Technology Officer for Mobile Communication Company.

'Our product strategy is to deliver superior performance with optimal battery life.

The realisation of the strategy will accelerate further development of 3G wireless services'.
