Texas Instruments has the industry's first touch screen controller with an I2C interface

The new device is a complete four-wire resistive touch screen interface circuit with on-chip 12bit ADC designed specifically for touch screen devices such as PDAs, PC tablets and pagers. The TSC2003 offers increased functionality, improved performance, and lower cost over existing solutions.

The device features an on-chip 2.5V reference, direct monitoring of two batteries, temperature sensing, two auxiliary analog inputs and touch-pressure measurement.

The internal reference will operate down to 2.7V supply voltage while monitoring the battery voltage from 0.5 to 6V.

The reference can be powered down when not in use to conserve power.

'The combination of an I2C interface with such a high level of functionality on a single chip simplifies processor interface, enhances circuit design and improves system accuracy in demanding touch screen devices', said Skip Osgood, marketing manager for TI's Data Acquisition products.

'Furthermore, the TSC2003 extends TI's industry-leading portfolio of low-cost, single-chip touch screen controllers'.

The TSC2003 supports all three industry-standard I2C serial bus and data transmission protocols: standard (up to 100Kbit/s), fast (up to 400Kbit/s) and high-speed (up to 3.4Mbit/s).

The I2C control bus simplifies circuit design and maximizes hardware efficiency in modern electronic systems where a number of peripheral ICs communicate with the processor over a single serial port.

The TSC2003 features low power operation (1.8mW max), precision performance (compared to microprocessors with only 8 or 10bit ADCs on board) and touch interrupt to alert the processor that operation has begun.

It can also be operated in a patented sense mode (ratiometric) to eliminate gain and offset errors caused by driver, power supply, temperature and touch impedance variations.

The TSC2003 is available now in a TSSOP-16 package.

Suggested resale pricing starts at $2.30 in 1000-piece quantities.
