ADC takes Flash
onboard for customisation
Texas Instruments has released the industry's first 24bit ADC with on-chip Flash memory for high-resolution measurement applications
The ADS1218 features 4Kbyte of on-chip Flash memory which is programmable over the entire 2.7 to 5.25V operating range. Flash memory offers the user increased levels of customisation by allowing key configurable functions such as linearisation, serialisation, calibration and data storage. Optimised for high-performance, low-power systems, the ADS1218 offers 24bit no-missing-code performance, effective resolution of 22bit, and less than 1mW power consumption.

The precision on-chip voltage reference is accurate to within 0.2% and has very low drift (typically 5ppm/C).
Also, linearity error is guaranteed to be less than +/-0.0015% of full-scale.
In addition to on-chip flash memory, the 24bit ADS1218 integrates an eight-channel multiplexer, programmable gain amplifier, input buffer, on-chip temperature sensor, burnout current sources, dual independent current DACs, on-chip voltage references, external differential reference inputs, selectable data output rate, offset DAC, and eight programmable digital I/O.
The multiplexer front-end supports eight input channels, which can be configured as differential pairs in any combination.
This allows the connection and conversion of up to eight separate inputs.
Burnout current sources allow for detection of an open or shorted sensor.
The selectable buffer provides a high impedance input for direct connection to transducers or low-level voltage signals.
The device's PGA provides for gains of up to 128.
Analogue-to-digital conversion is accomplished with a second-order modulation and a fully programmable sinc filter.
The settling time and noise is programmable through filter control bits.
The onboard current DACs operate independently with the maximum current set by an external resistor.
The ADS1218 includes eight programmable digital I/O that can be used for input or output - allowing easy isolation between the processor and the input measurement and control.
The serial interface is SPI compatible.
The ADS1218 is available today in a 48-pin TQFP surface-mount package.
Suggested resale pricing starts at $8.75 in 1000 piece quantities.
