Modeller accelerates network processor design
Seaway Networks has adopted VTOC, the Tenison Verilog/VHDL to C/C++ modelling solution, to accelerate time-to-market and improve productivity.

Seaway Networks has adopted VTOC, the Tenison Verilog/VHDL to C/C++ modelling solution, to accelerate time-to-market and improve productivity. Tenison VTOC creates fast cycle-accurate hardware models in C, C++, or SystemC, enabling engineering teams to improve the speed and quality of their SoC designs. "We used VTOC to create a C model from the RTL of our Network Content Processor, a multi-million-gate design", said Mustafa Hamid, Software Manager at Seaway Networks.
"The C model allowed us to easily add new points of visibility into the hardware and it runs about 10 times faster than the compiled Verilog.
The C model is also easier to integrate with the rest of the software for initial testing".
A VTOC cycle-accurate C model significantly improves the codevelopment process because it looks and behaves like a hardware device, but can be probed through software which notably reduces the debugging effort.
In addition, using the C model increases the productivity of the engineers involved.
Seaway Networks is also using the VTOC model as part of its Virtual Development Platform to provide a functionally accurate software representation of the Network Content Processor.
It provides application developers the ability to evaluate and work with the ASSP without the necessity of a hardware platform.
"Seaway has developed virtual prototyping techniques using VTOC to gain the commercial advantages of starting and completing software development and system verification earlier in the design cycle", according to Jeremy Bennett, Tenison EDA CEO.
"Modelling in C/C++ can be accomplished automatically with great performance improvements over traditional RTL.
The hardware and software development teams of the future will be more closely integrated, using an integrated flow of tools and technology to deliver results on tight timescales.
