These users, needing to connect an oscilloscope to a PC, are challenged with interfaces and procedures that are awkward, complicated and time-intensive.
Tektronix' OpenChoice software - previously available only on the company's high-performance oscilloscope products - now provides customers with a solution for value oscilloscopes that simplifies the capture of waveforms, measurement data and oscilloscope settings on an external PC, while enabling easy documentation and analysis of measurement results using standard applications including Microsoft Excel and Word.
It provides a cost-effective option to streamline the creation of required engineering reports, service procedures, quality control processes, educational programmes and more.
"Until now, engineers, technicians and educators struggled with complicated, manual processes for documenting and analysing their work.
Integrating the oscilloscope and the PC for many standard tasks is potentially one of the most valuable assets they now possess to simplify their work", said Colin Shepard, Vice President and General Manager, Oscilloscope Products, Tektronix: "The exceptional flexibility of Tektronix' OpenChoice software, combined with new features including CompactFlash mass storage, addresses customers who want a cost-effective tool for effortless documentation and analysis while accessing the excellent measurement performance and high productivity found in our value family of oscilloscopes".

OpenChoice solutions offered with the TDS1000, TDS2000 and TDS3000B Series digital oscilloscopes deliver simple, seamless integration between the oscilloscope and the PC, providing users with multiple choices to easily capture, transfer, document and analyse their measurement results, according to their application environment and preference.
The OpenChoice TDSPCS1 PC communications software allows users to quickly and easily visualise, analyse, document, print and share waveforms, setups and measurement data using familiar Microsoft applications.
The software package includes TDS oscilloscope toolbars for Microsoft Excel and Word that install directly into MS-Excel 2000/XP and MS-Word 2000/XP, and the OpenChoice Desktop application.
The toolbars provide users with instant, one-click access to waveforms, setups and measurement data directly into Microsoft Word and Excel applications.
The OpenChoice Desktop application allows users to quickly transfer waveform data points and save data and screen images into a wide variety of file formats, such as csv and bmp that can then be used in a wide variety of Windows programs.
Comprehensive online help is available in multiple languages to ensure worldwide support for users.
Seamless integration with third-party software applications also simplifies documentation and analysis tasks using the TDS1000, TDS2000 and TDS3000B Series oscilloscopes.
Users can employ popular commercial software or create custom programs using familiar application development tools and environments, such as Matlab and LabView, for detailed analysis or documentation.
Waveform data, screen images, measurements and front-panel setups are easily stored for transfer to an external PC or another oscilloscope using storage media available with the TDS1000, TDS2000 and TDS3000B Series oscilloscopes.
On introduction, the optional TDS2MEM storage and communications module for the TDS1000 and TDS2000 Series oscilloscopes stores data on the same memory card used by digital cameras.
This high-capacity CompactFlash memory card holds 96 or more reference waveforms per 8Mbyte, 128 or more screen images per 8Mbyte and 4000 or more front-panel setups per 8Mbyte.
TDS3000B Series oscilloscope users can continue to easily save reference waveforms and setups using the instrument's standard floppy disk drive.
Communication modules offer a range of connectivity features for the TDS1000 and TDS2000 Series oscilloscopes including GPIB and RS232 connections.
The TDS3000B Series oscilloscope delivers standard connectivity that includes a built-in Ethernet connection, and optional connectivity via a communications module including GPIB, VGA and RS232 connections.
Standard e*Scope software allows users to remotely control their TDS3000B oscilloscope from a PC anywhere on the network using a web browser.
Optional WaveStar software links a wide variety of Tektronix oscilloscope models, including the TDS3000B, TDS2000 and TDS1000 Series, with PCs through Ethernet and GPIB connections, and offers live waveform reproduction, active remote control of oscilloscope-specific settings, and advanced measurements, such as power harmonics and strip charting.
