Monitors verify more A/V standards
Tektronix has added a new audio option and software upgrades to its innovative series of multiformat waveform monitors
The complexity of digital audio and video systems require sophisticated instruments to verify the quality and compliance of those signals with industry standards. Broadcasters, network operators, production and post-production facilities, needing to maximise return on equipment investments, require a single instrument that monitors and verifies the quality, content and compliance of audio and video signals.

Equipment manufacturers need a powerful waveform measurement tool to help them design, install and maintain digital audio and video systems.
Building on the success of its WFM700 multiformat (standard and high definition) waveform monitors, Tektronix has added advanced video measurement features and an optional audio monitoring module to validate standards and document compliance, making a wide range of audio and video measurements possible with a single, powerful instrument.
"These new video enhancements, combined with our digital audio upgrade to the WFM700, extend the instrument's industry leading position and bring Tektronix' precision audio and video measurement capabilities together in a single chassis in the way that our customers asked us", said Todd Biddle, General Manager, Video Product Line, Tektronix.
"Video professionals and manufacturers that need to monitor multi-format video and multi-channel audio now have a single powerful tool that does both".
The new AES/EBU digital audio option and field upgrade kit for the WFM700 Series offers audio monitoring of four channel pairs (up to eight separate channels) from either four rear-panel BNC inputs or audio that is embedded within the digital video signal.

When selecting embedded audio for monitoring, the four BNC inputs can be reconfigured to output a de-embedded audio signal, adding to the versatility of the WFM700.
The WFM700 audio monitoring option offers support for stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 multichannel audio, level bars with selectable ballistics and user-definable scaling, Lissajous (x-y and L/R) display, channel status display, audio session screen display, audio error checking and logging with embedded presence or AES/EBU lock detection, audio CRC error checking, and other measurement tools.
The new firmware upgrade to the WFM700, available free of charge through the Tektronix website, adds new status reporting and error detection features.
The WFM700 can now report the presence of ANC data, including critically important closed captioning as well as VITC and ANC time codes.
New errors detected include format mismatches, RP165 errors, CRC errors in HD signals, ANC errors, SAV errors, and line count mismatches in HD signals.
A new video session screen, available only on the WFM700, summarises a variety of statistics relevant to content health and compliance including many of the errors noted above as well as RP165/CRC errors and gamut errors.
This new capability offers unique insight into video signal quality over time including the percentage of total content that is in error.
In addition, this new release introduces a powerful set of features that further enhance the product's versatility.
A two-pane multimode display presents two different displays simultaneously in a user-definable configuration.
New event logging with time-of-day and VITC time stamping preserves critical information and maintains a record for later analysis or documentation of service level.
Other features include remote control over Ethernet via a web browser, and remote alarming and preset recall via a 9-pin connector.
The Tektronix WFM700 offers a comprehensive set of features to address the needs of television professionals using digital video technology in either standard or high definition formats, with the ability to add audio monitoring.
From enhanced error checking with full time-stamping and logging, to sophisticated remote control, and increased functionality via a versatile display, the WFM700 provides flexible and fully automated checking that puts users in control of every important measurement parameter.
