MPEG test system
aims towards interactive TV
Tektronix has enhanced its MTS300 MPEG test system to provide more in-depth analysis capabilities and also include functionality that will enable the development of interactive television
Tektronix has enhanced one of the products in its Emmy-award-winning MPEG test system portfolio to provide more in-depth analysis capabilities and also include functionality that will enable the development of interactive television (iTV). One of the challenges in applying MPEG technology is ensuring quality control, because the technology inevitably adds complexity to the digital television (DTV) package.

Therefore, MPEG streams must be consistently checked as they move through the distribution chain.
Tektronix is tackling the ever-evolving challenge of analysing MPEG streams by offering a new carousel analyser for testing iTV systems, a powerful new offline multiplexer, and a new elementary stream analyser for its high-performance MPEG protocol diagnostic and analysis tool, the MTS300 MPEG test system.
"Design engineers use MPEG test systems to design, verify, and characterise MPEG-2 related equipment.
Broadcasters use them to validate and verify video equipment functionality prior to making purchasing decisions", said Todd Biddle, General Manager, Video Business, Tektronix: "As our customers strive to stay on top of the technology curve, Tektronix must consistently be one step further ahead in order to bring them to the new levels of test, measurement and monitoring that is required in today's video industry".
An interactive test regime is vital for consumer electronics manufacturers to test user terminals, for broadcast infrastructure suppliers to test data carousel generation tools, for multiplexers to test transport stream protocols, for broadcasters to ensure that they are broadcasting their iTV content correctly, and for content providers to author and package interactive programming.

Tektronix has tackled the challenges for testing iTV systems by offering a carousel analyser in its MTS300.
The carousel analyser enables engineers to quickly inspect and analyse a protocol stack's layers, speeding up the diagnosis of errors.
An elementary stream analyser provides the ability to decode the moving picture and audio from within a packetised elementary stream (PES) and test the lower levels of an elementary stream within a transport multiplexer.
This functionality provides added confidence when analysing streams because encoder performance can be verified down to specific layers.
An offline multiplexer makes it possible to produce multiple program transport streams with all of the associated system information in order to test the performance of the equipment in both the broadcast chain and consumer devices.
These streams can then be injected into the system using a wide range of interfaces.
The system's built-in syntax knowledge of tables and descriptors ensures compliance and high quality output of the final multiplex transport stream.
Until 30th August 2002, Tektronix is offering a 25% trade-in discount for existing MTS100/MTS200 customers who want to upgrade to a more advanced MPEG test system solution, such as the MTS300.
