News Release from: Tektronix | Subject: GPRS deciphering for K1205 and K1297-G20

Software makes more sense of GPRS codes
Tektronix has developed an important GPRS deciphering solution for its proven line of network protocol testers
In order to be competitive, mobile network operators are constantly challenged to provide enhanced, next-generation services to subscribers, such as mobile banking or mobile medical services. To provide such services and increase the opportunity for additional revenue, operators must be able to ensure security on their networks' air interface.

Today, enciphering makes nearly all GPRS procedures and subscriber activities up to the Gb interface invisible to conventional monitoring tools.
The enciphering function must be switched off during monitoring and analysis, which deprives mobile users of a critical layer of security for their transmissions.
It also denies important information to the technician or engineer attempting to observe the transmission's behaviour under "normal" (enciphered) conditions.

Tektronix' new GPRS deciphering software for the K1205 Version 2.30 (v2.30) and the K1297-G20 Version 2.00 (v2.00) protocol testers enables operators and equipment manufacturers to automatically decipher transmission at the Gb interface, providing unhampered access to all messages above the protocol layer Logical Link Control (LLC).
At the same time, enciphering remains "on", and subscribers receive the uninterrupted security and privacy they expect.
The application deciphers both signalling and payload content and supports online (real-time) and offline analysis.
"By providing operators with the ability to offer enhanced mobile services without compromising security, Tektronix is answering a significant need in the industry and enabling the advancement of GPRS services and technology", said Johannes Schaedel, Vice President, Mobile Business, Tektronix: "The arrival of Tektronix' GPRS deciphering solution allows enciphering to remain "on" during monitoring and analysis.
This is a major move forward in monitoring technology".
Tektronix' GPRS deciphering software provides the versatility to address the needs of both operators and manufacturers of GPRS equipment by supporting three deciphering modes and both of today's prevailing GPRS encryption algorithms (GEA1 and GEA2).
The deciphering modes include full automatic mode, half automatic mode and manual mode.
The full automatic mode recognises up to 1000 subscribers over the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and their corresponding enciphering key values (termed "Kc").
The half automatic mode recognises Kc values for up to 1000 manually entered IMSI.
Both of these modes are efficient modes for operators monitoring or troubleshooting enciphered transmissions at the Gb interface.
The half automatic mode and the manual mode (which accepts up to 1000 manually entered IMSI and Kc values) meets the needs of equipment manufacturers who implement controlled test and evaluation plans using known content.
