Tektronix has added significant extensions to its monitoring system for deployment and performance verification of GPRS networks

The new Version 4.0 (V4.0) software for Tektronix' NET-GPRS monitoring system enhances the product's integrated set of optimisation and troubleshooting tools for GPRS networks, adding features that enable correlation and analysis of messages from both telecomms and Internet protocol (IP) based interfaces within the GPRS network.

In addition, the NET-GPRS system is the first of its kind to offer automatic deciphering, which is required for specific GPRS interfaces.

"By providing an advanced monitoring system that addresses a combination of telecom and IP based interfaces, Tektronix is enabling operators to more efficiently address next-generation mobile network requirements", said Johannes Schaedel, vice president, Mobile Business Unit, Tektronix: "With the NET-GPRS system's V4.0, telecom and IP based interface information is presented in one integrated analysis environment, providing a unique convergent view, and network operators monitoring specific interfaces can use the automatic deciphering feature to provide subscribers with enhanced quality of service".

It is common practice to encipher the content on the Gb (telecomms) interface in a GPRS network (this is in addition to any encryption that may be applied to the transmission at its origin).

Enciphering makes some GPRS procedures and subscriber activities invisible to most monitoring tools, and the function must be switched off to allow proper monitoring and analysis.

The NET-GPRS system's V4.0 is the first solution of its kind that can automatically decipher information, providing unhampered access to all protocol messages.

Enciphering remains "on", and subscribers receive the security and privacy they expect, even as the NET-GPRS system's V4.0 speeds troubleshooting on the network.

The NET-GPRS system's distributed network-wide monitoring approach allows it to acquire information from diverse interfaces, protocol stacks and geographical areas of the network.

With V4.0 software, the system gains procedure trace and protocol analysis capabilities for a host of IP interfaces including Gn, Gp, and Gi, as well as telecomms interfaces including Gb and Gr.

A procedure trace tracks, collects and stores the history of subscribers' activity throughout a network.

With the NET-GPRS V4.0 procedure trace capability, operators can quickly determine whether inefficiencies are originating within their GPRS network or elsewhere in the external IP realm.

The procedure trace, therefore, is a key tool for maintaining quality of service (QoS) and reducing customer churn in an emerging GPRS network.
