Tektronix has a new solution package that will further enable the development and deployment of more complex network elements for UMTS mobile networks

The newest third-generation (3G) UMTS network elements are much more complex to test than existing mobile network elements. In addition, as with each step to next-generation services and standards, the UMTS network elements must be quickly and effectively tested and made readily available to those operators implementing UMTS networks.

The UMTS solution package for the K1297-G20 protocol tester adds important new UMTS monitoring, simulation, emulation and conformance testing features to address the increased complexity of 3G network elements.

Tektronix' UMTS solution package is designed to help equipment manufacturers accelerate development tasks and network operators verify new UMTS devices that set the pace for the emergence of UMTS network technologies.

These tasks include software verification and system integration.

"Tektronix is committed to providing solutions that enable the fastest and simplest transition possible to next-generation networks.

Since UMTS is one of the most promising standards for third-generation services, we are coming to market now with features to facilitate its success", said Johannes Schaedel, vice president, Mobile Business Unit, Tektronix.

"With the ability to emulate a live network, the K1297-G20 protocol tester's new simulation, emulation and conformance test capabilities offer an in-depth view that ensures fast problem resolution".

Most emerging UMTS networks will be built atop existing GSM and GPRS network structures.

Developers and operators need tools that can test all three types of network elements with equal facility.

The K1297-G20 with the new UMTS solution package can do so and provides a seamless concurrent view of the three entities.

The newest elements, Node-B and the Radio Network Controller (RNC), incorporate software and interfaces that must be verified for compliance with a host of signalling protocols such as Radio Access Network Application Part (RANAP), Radio Resource Control (RRC) and others.

The new UMTS solution package for the K1297-G20 includes a set of new hardware and software components that address all of the new network elements, interfaces and signalling protocols associated with the UMTS architecture.

Extending the capabilities of K1297-G20 UMTS features announced last year, the software components of the package add substantial simulation, emulation and conformance testing capabilities for the IuCS, IuPS, luBC, lub and Iur interfaces of the UMTS radio access network.

The hardware portion enables testing of AAL2 and AAL5 protocol stacks and supports high-performance online AAL2 (real-time) layer encoding and decoding.

This feature is at the heart of the system's unique ability to simultaneously test control-plane and user-plane protocols, providing in-depth protocol visibility not found in other UMTS solutions.

The resulting insight into the protocol stacks makes it easier for developers to understand and fine-tune their software implementations.
