Tektronix has upgraded its popular communications signal analyser and introduced two new optical sampling modules aimed at the fast-growing 10Gbit Ethernet and Optical Transport Network markets

Tektronix has upgraded its popular communications signal analyser and introduced two new optical sampling modules aimed at the fast-growing 10Gbit Ethernet (10 GbE) and Optical Transport Network (10 Gb OTN) markets. Market pressure to provide affordable 10 GbE products has prompted a shift to development of higher-datarate transmission components based on low-cost low-power optical transceivers - technologies in widespread use today in lower speed transmission systems.

These low-power devices require higher sensitivity and improved noise performance in manufacturing test equipment.

In addition, equipment makers ramping up for 10 GbE production need measurement solutions that can quickly deliver accurate, repeatable test results for the higher-datarate products.

The new Tektronix CSA8000B Series communications signal analyser coupled with the new 80C08 optical sampling module form the industry's first integrated solution that offers the measurement sensitivity and throughput required for emerging 10 GbE manufacturing production requirements.

"As one of the industry's first solutions that can address new measurement and high manufacturing throughput requirements, the CSA8000B and the 80C08 enable optical component manufacturers to speed the transition to lower-cost 10 GbE technology", said Rick King, vice president, Optical Business Unit, Tektronix.

"With enhancements to the mainframe, and the addition of this optical sampling module, the CSA8000B sets the standard for high-speed testing of low-power 10 GbE signals".

The heart of the CSA8000B's 10 GbE measurement capability is the new 80C08 optical sampling module.

This module uses an amplified optical-to-electrical convertor to deliver the lowest noise level (2mW RMS typical) and the highest optical sensitivity (-13dBm) of any solution on the market today.

As a result, the 80C08 delivers the sensitivity required for the lower-power transmitters used in low-cost 10 GbE network elements.

Equally important, the 80C08 uses dedicated per-channel signal acquisition processing to speed test throughput.

This reduces test time by up to five times or more, to support the growing demand for 10 GbE elements.

The 80C08 supports testing of components, modules and systems based on the Draft IEEE P802.3AE 10 Gb Ethernet standard using 10GBase-W (10.3125Gbit/s) and 10GBase-R (9.95328Gbit/s) datarates.

Compatible with optical wavelengths ranging from 700 to 1650nm, the 80C08 can be connected to either single-mode or multi-mode fiber.

The module also offers optional integrated clock recovery supporting both datarates.

The new 80C09 optical sampling module, which is also being introduced, supports 10Gbit/s OTN applications as specified by ITU-T G.709 standard and provides complete optical test solutions for OC-192/STM 64, as well as general purpose optical component testing.

The receiver accepts single-mode fiber input for 1100 to 1650nm wavelengths and also offers optional integrated clock recovery supporting both data rates (9.953 and 10.71Gbit/s).

The 8000B Series mainframe enhances the performance of the proven 8000 Series platform.

The CSA8000B accommodates up to eight channels (a combination of up to two optical and eight electrical channels) and can be configured to address any of the prevailing optical datacommunication and telecommunication datarates between 155Mbit/s and 40Gbit/s in operation today.

The TDS8000B addresses high-speed electrical impedance characterisation testing (including time domain reflectometry) measurements used in microprocessor bus systems, electrical interconnects and telecommunication equipment.

The CSA/TDS8000/8000B support modules with optical and electrical bandwidths to 50GHz.

The 8000 series instruments provide more than 100 automated measurements and support them with industry-leading performance in key specification areas, including signal fidelity and jitter.
