Tektronix has added third-generation (3G) measurement capability to its proven, portable basestation field tool. As the first field tool to provide UMTS/WCDMA test capability, the Tektronix NetTekT base transceiver station (BTS) tool with options WD1 and WR1 enables mobile network operators to take the lead in pursuit of next-generation mobile services while also maintaining their second-generation (2G) infrastructures. "With the addition of UMTS/WCDMA capabilities to the NetTekT BTS field tool, Tektronix is enabling mobile network operators to stay ahead of the market by deploying 3G networks quickly and economically, giving them a competitive advantage", said Johannes Schaedel, vice president, Mobile Business Unit, Tektronix.
"Options WD1 and WR1 enable mobile operators to complete a whole range of routine UMTS/WCDMA transmitter tests while complementing the BTS field tool's suite of options for emerging 3G requirements".
With the addition of options WD1 and WR1, the NetTekT BTS field tool delivers the most needed field transmitter measurements for UMTS/WCDMA basestation installation and maintenance.
Automated tests include a full set of demodulation measurements such as pilot, sync and code domain power measurements, codograms (which quickly highlight code power variations), scrambling code detection, and more.
The code domain display has a "zoom" function that magnifies a selected portion of the 512 codes shown on the main code power graph.
This speeds analysis by making it much easier to distinguish the value of any individual group of codes.
This and other easy-to-use functions make the NetTekT BTS tool a productive tool for all users, even the less-experienced field technicians common in today's fast-changing mobile market.
When equipped with options WD1 and WR1, the NetTekT BTS field tool will minimise the time and effort required for UMTS/WCDMA basestations after installation.
Operators who have already adopted the NetTekT BTS field tool (with the YBT250 module) to service their existing 2G infrastructures can continue to use them for this purpose and will see other benefits as they move to 3G.
These users' earlier investments will pay off in savings as they purchase only the WD1 and WR1 software packages to meet their UMTS/WCDMA installation and maintenance (I and M) needs, eliminating the capital cost of a new dedicated platform.
In addition, these operators will save training and inventory costs of a new platform.
A rugged portable platform with multi-standard measurement capability, the NetTekT fills the gap between expensive, full-compliance testing tools and low-cost, single-task instruments designed to perform only one measurement.
The compact battery-powered tool, which weighs slightly more than 5kg, is also easy to transport to remote sites.
The NetTekT modular architecture supports a range of BTS transmitter measurements that currently include AMPS, IS-136, GSM 900, cdmaOne (IS-95), cdma2000, GSM 1800, GSM 1900, and now UMTS/WCDMA.
