The A1030-A is not only a high performance GPS receiver, but a microprocessor module claimed to have virtually unlimited communication and digital I/O capabilities.

New from Tyco Electronics Power Systems, the A1030-A is not only a high performance GPS receiver, but a microprocessor module with virtually unlimited communication and digital I/O capabilities.

Running Tyco's GPS Software, it offers high sensitivity along with excellent TTFF values at ultralow power consumption for a wide range of standard GPS applications.

In combination with a professional tool set, the A1030-A opens a new world of applications, especially in the automotive area.

The A1030-A is Tyco Electronics' latest GPS receiver extending the GPS receiver family based on ST Microelectronics' STA2051 base band controller and SiGe's SE 4100L RF down-convertor, already used in the company?s A1029-A and A1029-B.

Capable of receiving signals from up to 12 GPS satellites, the A1030-A transfers them into position and timing information that can be read over a serial port.

But where most of standard receivers stop, the A1030-A starts to show its muscles.

The major task of a GPS receiver used in applications such as telematics navigation, electronic toll collect and many more, is to give out a precise and valid position.

That's why beyond standard GPS the A1030-A offers WAAS/EGNOS capability, and an accurate 1pulse/s signal, synchronised to universal time (UTC), supports timing and synchronisation tasks.

With these satellite-based augmentation systems, position accuracy is even higher than the standard three meters.

When running into a situation where no more satellites can be seen, dead reckoning takes over.

With the help of external information ? ie an odometer pulse and a gyro signal - the receiver keeps on calculating the current position.

As the internal resources of the STA2051 include an ADC, this can be done with a minimum number of external components.

When requirements get even higher and a system asks for communication, the A1030A can help even further.

With free processing power of an ARM/TDMI, external Flash memory and SRAM, the A1030-A has the capability to run custom specific applications.

With a complete development tool kit and a development board, Tyco Electronics offers the right environment to make use of this.

And with plenty of I/O possibilities that comprise HDLC, SPI, I2C, HDLC, CAN, USB and smart card interfaces, the module allows interfacing to a wide variety of peripherals and can finally control a complete system which makes it especially suitable for automotive applications.

"The combination of a sophisticated positioning product and the possibilities that are offered by programming and configuring the product is unique in the market", comments Hans Wiedemann, Product Marketing Manager at Tyco Electronics Power Systems.

"Along with low power consumption, high sensitivity, a standard I/O connector and an antenna cable, the A1030-A is a cost effective, high-end GPS controller that fits perfectly into any kind of professional GPS systems".
