At its annual general meeting in Tokyo, the Open Contents Platform Association (OCPA), representing interests from the world of consumer electronics and multimedia content, named Francis Charig, Chairman of Tao Group, as its new Chairman. He succeeds the role from Yasuo Nishiguchi, President of Kyocera, who has presided over the OCPA since its creation in 2001 as an organisation to promote an open environment where content and applications can be distributed across digital networks without technological constraints. The OCPA 50 member companies include many blue-chip firms from the content and technology industries.
The purpose of the OCPA is to promote the standardisation of an open environment for content development and to facilitate cross-platform portability regardless of underlying hardware, operating system and programming language.
The OCPA has ratified Tao Group's open intent multimedia platform as its technology of choice, as the virtual processor technology on which intent is based is not only independent of hardware and operating system, but is also recognised for its outstanding multimedia and Java technology capabilities.
OCPA member companies have successfully released a wide range of commercial products such as PDAs, digital video cameras, home servers and digital video recorders.
Francis Charig comments: "Since its inception the OCPA has successfully unified companies who would otherwise be competitors in the common aim of building a vibrant and profitable market for digital hardware and the content and applications that run on it.
As chairman I will work with the member companies to build on the excellent work of my predecessor and drive the OCPA forward to shape the future of consumer electronics.
We recognise that 2004 will see ever increasing emphasis upon the requirement for premium content and services, so the OCPA will be structured to take advantage of this industry momentum".
